I did think he had some interesting things to say about race in the book, particularly about what it's like to be black police officers in Harlem and to feel not quite a part of any one community, but you are right that the book is very uneven. The speedy writing and foreign audience do explain a lot, but still, I don't think I'll be seeking out any more Himes to read.

Litlove, yes, very wise to stick to P.D. James and leave Himes alone.

Court, you and me both! He's doing a great job of turning all attention on me now (despite being a man :-)!).

HMH, nice to know I'm not the only one who gets a little tired of all the gratuitous violence.Emily Bartonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13971084813206845680noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28169009.post-32763953213264118602009-04-03T15:29:00.000-04:002009-04-03T15:29:00.000-04:00Thanks for the heads up, I'll avoid Chester Himes....Thanks for the heads up, I'll avoid Chester Himes. There is far too much violence depicted in the crime fiction being written today, in my opinion. I know there are rotten people out there doing despicable things to each other. I just have gotten to the point that I am NOT interested in the gory details any more, and any mystery that has to be fleshed out with intimate details of dismemberment and torture probably doesn't merit the time spent turning its pages. I no longer read James Patterson for this very reason.healingmagichandshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03785882461027155830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28169009.post-77219595762972651162009-04-03T10:19:00.000-04:002009-04-03T10:19:00.000-04:00So, so glad to hear the good news about Bob - I've...So, so glad to hear the good news about Bob - I've been really worried for you two! Happy to hear he's on the mend and that, you know, we can turn our attention back to YOU. I mean seriously. I've never read Chester Himes, and am probably not likely to - you make a very persuasive case for bypassing him in favour of P D James!litlovehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10952927245186474480noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28169009.post-19631449042367297862009-04-02T20:29:00.000-04:002009-04-02T20:29:00.000-04:00Emily - this is much how I felt. If you take it on that level, the fact that it's not very good makes sense. And also, I think, they hyperreality is somewhat explained because I'm sure it was exaggerated for a foreign audience.
But still - just not a very good book and perhaps a classic more as a period piece than as good writing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
